EU Preparedness Union Strategy to prevent and react to emerging threats and crises
The EU Preparedness Union Strategy was just launched by the Commission. It came a long way from the initial proposal in a Finnish non-paper and the findings of the former Finnish President Niinistö's report last year. As Commissioner Hadja Lahbib said on the Strategy's objective, "preparedness must be woven into the fabric of our societies."
Some pickups from its 30 key actions regarding disaster prevention and preparedness capacity building:
⚫ Develop guidelines for Member States to reach population self-sufficiency of at least 72 hours as part of the PreparEU initiative.
⚫ Include preparedness in school education curricula and create a new preparedness priority in EU youth programmes, such as Erasmus+.
⚫ Propose a Climate Action Plan that will embed ‘preparedness by design’ across relevant EU sector policies and investments.
⚫ Create a public-private Preparedness Taskforce to cooperate more effectively with, among others, the scientific community.
⚫ Explore urgently concrete measures to attract top talent researchers for the EU's long-term resilience and preparedness.
